Lily Kirk is a scientist and an audit team member with Aster Global.
In this role, Dr. Kirk utilizes her more than 15 years of experience to meet the needs of clients on validation and verification projects, especially those related to Agricultural Land Management and Blue Carbon (coastal wetland projects). Dr. Kirk also works on Blue Carbon consulting and project development.
Dr. Kirk is an ecosystem ecologist and biogeochemist by training, specializing in both freshwater and coastal systems, making her a valuable resource for clients in the Blue Carbon sector. Prior to joining Aster Global, Dr. Kirk conducted research to better understand carbon cycling in subtropical streams and rivers. Her research involved extensive fieldwork both on the water and in riparian wetlands, manipulation experiments, modeling, data mining, and collaborations with researchers at multiple universities. Dr. Kirk draws on these past experiences and connections for her current project development work with Aster Global as she reviews scientific literature and analyzes data to determine drivers, reviews potential methods, and designs workflows that align with methodologies and the requirements of carbon programs.
Similarly, Dr. Kirk draws on prior experiences for validation/verification work. Her postdoctoral training at the US Environmental Protection Agency focused on using landscape data to prioritize agricultural conservation practices and improve nutrient pollution at large spatial scales. Dr. Kirk’s familiarity with conservation practices, geospatial datasets, spreadsheets, and coding is invaluable for the review of agricultural projects at Aster Global.
In addition to her technical skills, Dr. Kirk is an excellent writer and presenter. She served a decade as a math and science teacher, teacher of gifted children, and environmental educator. She is a past Teacher of the Year for her innovative efforts not only in the classroom, but also re-designing a high school, as well as a Google Teacher of the Month. In her current role, Dr. Kirk drafts project documents, leads discussions about methodology, and educates project partners. She is a lead author of three scientific publications, a co-author of seven other high-impact papers, and has given talks at numerous conferences and meetings.
